HAPPY 72nd BIRTHDAY, surf music great DEAN TORRANCE of JAN & DEAN!
JAN & DEAN were true pioneers of surf music dating to the late '50s. They scored 26 chart hits between 1958-66, a dozen of them co-written by Jan (Berry) & The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson.
DEAN is a longtime resident of Huntington Beach & was instrumental in having it officially named "Surf City."
This is a great little video I just stumbled upon. It's a live medley from JAN & DEAN from 1965: Surf City / Dead Man's Curve / I Found A Girl / The Little Old Lady From Pasadena / You've Got To Hide Your Love Away / Hang On Sloopy.
I believe this was filmed for an aborted movie or TV show. The editing is often a bit jarring and the crowd shots sometimes don't fit the music quite right - but it's still great!
The real curio included here is their take on John Lennon's sullen "YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY," that The Beatles had just featured in "HELP!" In fact, it's new enough, at least for JAN & DEAN, that JAN is holding a sheet of paper with the lyrics. The song is one of the darkest love songs John ever wrote, I really like this version.
