ON THIS DATE: MARCH 14, 1955

1955: Arthur Godfrey, one of the most popular individuals on television at the time as host of CBS’s hit radio & TV hit series, “Talent Scouts,” turned down the chance to sign ELVIS PRESLEY, but instead he signed PAT BOONE, who was at the same audition.

“GOOD ROCKIN' TONIGHT” was recorded it on September 10, 1954 at Sun Records with guitarist Scotty Moore and standup bass player Bill Black & was released as a single before the end of the month. At the time of its release it failed to chart, but it’s now considered one of the seminal rock and roll records.

In 1954, PAT BOONE released his first single, “TWO HEARTS, TWO KISSES.” It hit #8 on the R&B chart & #16 on the Top 40 Singles chart. He sounds a bit like a somewhat blander Elvis backed up by the Four Jordanaires.
