ON THIS DATE, MARCH 16: THE BEATLES BREAK RECORD

On this date in 1964, THE BEATLES set a new record for advance sales in the U.S. with 2,100,000 copies of their latest 45, “CAN'T BUY ME LOVE."

Paul wrote the song when THE FABS were in staying at the five-star George V hotel in Paris during their 20-concert run at the Olympia Theatre in January that year. They recorded it on Jan 29 at EMI's Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris.

It was the first BEATLES single without any of their trademark background harmonies.

"CAN'T BUY ME LOVE" was the only English-language track that THE BEATLES themselves recorded in a studio outside the UK. For EMI Germany, they recorded "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand" ("I Want to Hold Your Hand" & "Sie Liebt Dich" ("She Loves You") at the same session that day in Paris (Note: the instrumental portion of the Beatles' B-side "The Inner Light" was recorded in India by Indian session musicians).

This video is from their great TV special, "Around The Beatles" that was taped on April 19 in London. Yes, they're playing live.

Video 2: For "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT" (1964), Director Richard Lester used "CAN'T BUY ME LOVE" in what has become not only an iconic scene, but one of the most visually influential pre-music video scenes to present a song in film in the history of cinema.

Video 3: Uh, yep, here it is from "The Beatles Cartoon Show" that originally aired on ABC from September 1965 through October 1967.
